"I don’t care! Let me go Shal! I have to help him!" Kaira cried frantically while trying to free herself from Shal's grasp.

"Kaira, listen to me," Shal pleaded. "They're still fighting. Wait till they've all retreated!"

"No! There’s no time! I've got to help him now!" Wrenching her arm free, Kaira darted from their hiding place.

"KAIRA! KAIRA, COME BACK!" Shalebra shouted.

Kaira ignored Shalebra's tearful cries as she ran down the stone steps to the courtyard below. She couldn’t think straight—all she knew was that Lance was hurt and she needed to get to him as soon as possible. She looked around wildly, searching for a way to the drawbridge.
