Kaira found sleep difficult. All night she tossed and turned, wondering about what would happen the next day. By morning, the entire castle knew of the impending battle and excitement drenched the air. Seeing the dark shadows under Shal’s emerald eyes, Kaira knew she was not the only one who had trouble sleeping.
“I cannot believe this is happening,” Shal said, taking a sip of her drink. “I woke up this morning hoping we were home again.”
Kaira nodded. Nevertheless, her wish was the opposite. She wanted to actually be among the knights who were riding out to meet the oncoming danger—not that she would admit it to Shal. “Did you notice all the preparations outside in the courtyard and on the walls?” she asked.
