“Kaira, can you hear me?” Shal’s voice asked.

“Shal?” Kaira’s voice was small and drowsy. She opened her eyes wearily to find that she was lying in the massive bed in the blue bedroom suite. Sarah was rinsing a cloth in a basin of water.

“Yes, it’s me.” Shal’s face appeared above her, a worried expression in her eyes. “Are you all right?”

“The strangest thing happened. I was riding Birjanji and I saw a dragon.”

Shal smoothed away the hairs on her forehead. “Shh... It’s okay Kaira. It was just a dream. You’re safe now.”

“The dragon is no dream,” Sarah said. “The dragon is real.”
