“Why do you think he’ll never come back?” she asked.

Erica’s eyes turned cold, and the expression on her face was dreary.

“Because  he’s dead.”

That exchange happened a few months before, and May had been able to get very little out of her since then. But there was something about her demeanor - something about the way she said it. There was no fear there, no hysterics. There was no horror at the possibility of what might have happened. Instead, there was a sense of knowing – of assurance, and Erica wasn’t the only one in the house that knew what happened that day.
