them, and found that most of his fellow inmates were sleeping. A few faces peeked through the narrow windows, revealing angry features and wild eyes. A few inmates were walking around the area, but it was a small number – eight at the most. Some were washing in the showers, others were simply watching television. None of them seemed to want to use the phone. Brian couldn’t help but wonder what his mother was doing. He didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to hear somebody’s voice. Anybody. If she started to cry, or get too upset, Brian thought, he would just hang up. He silently assured himself that everything would be alright. He was wrong.

“Yo – what you doin’?” a voice growled. Brian turned to see who it belonged to, but he realized he had to look down...
