Half past two in the morning, and still no sleep. Georgie Ellis made a mental note to herself – no swimming today. Was it better to stay awake or try and get a few hours before breakfast and the first session of the day? Without thinking, she set the alarm for 7.45 and hoped she would be able to shower and dress in 10 minutes ready for breakfast at 8.00. She hated rush but knew that a few hours would mean she was refreshed.

As refreshed as she could be, that is. Sitting with Pauline Philbey for an hour at 1 am was not the best preparation for an intensive weekend working on the Towpath Murders. At first, she thought the old dear was delirious – too much gin – but she soon released the Team’s forensic archivist was talking a lot of sense, even in the small hours of the morning....
