Daisy rented out a room upstairs. She was down the hall from Pi Eye and other roamers and stragglers looking for temporary rooms in the city for little or even no money. When Edna's little grandson used to come over with his much uglier sister, Daisy would always wink at him and jerk her head back for him to follow her upstairs to her bedroom.

     Up in her room she had a flower quilt on her bed and scented candles along the shelves and on the window sill that burned through the night. Her doilies filled her dresser drawers and sat stacked on the floor of the closet, too abundant for places of their own. In her top drawer was always a basket full of hard candies and chocolates that she herself never ate.
