“We have cooks. What we need are sanitation workers.”

I wondered if this was a test. If nothing else, the pandemics had taught us all that sanitation workers were among the most essential workers around. That didn’t make the job less dangerous or more pleasant.

“I am honored to serve,” I said, repeating the expected phrase as humbly as I could. .
