“Slow down!” called Gordon after Elie. She was running down the tunnel and she had one of the two intact lamps. They had left the other lantern on the edge of the pit to light Saladin and David, in case one of them woke up from their fall.
“Hurry up!” replied Elie from twenty feet ahead. Gordon was glad to know the tunnel was straight so he did not really need to keep up if she ran too fast, but he had a nagging worry about discovering and falling into a pit of his own.
He saw the lantern bob out of sight: Elie climbing the small ramp to the exterior. He had to make his way by feel for the final fifteen feet of the tunnel and bumped his head slightly as he pulled himself out into the moonlit plain between the small pyramid and the other. He could see...
