Gordon had been watching the crouched figure closely as the figure watched Ygerna. He was watching so intently, in fact, that when Ygerna screamed he was taken by surprise. What – or who – had scared her was a mystery to him, and when he looked up the glade was suddenly full of activity. Elie, sitting next to him in the low grass that surrounded their little hiding place, jumped up immediately, running straight into the glade, armed with her umbrella.

The idea of sitting in the weeds, in the dark, by himself, did not appeal to Gordon, so he jumped up to join her, brandishing his own umbrella.

Ygerna was still screaming, and there was a flurry of adult figures rushing here and there, shouting, shoving into one another. There was Seamus, and Myron, and then Gordon recognized Lord Uhelbar....
