I need to feel again

I have become numb to the pain inflicted upon my culture

I need to hear again

I can’t distinguish between my life and my ancestors

I feel shame

Not knowing which customs and traditions shaped me

Assimilated into a systemic racist system that hates me

There are days that I hear rhythms beating in my chest

Burrowing deep into my eardrums

I wonder where do these curiosities come from

Ancestors speaking from beyond

Is it my DNA decoding and becoming one, with my spirit?

Undoing what has been undone

Replacing vibrant memories of when there was such a freedom

Inviting me to taste the richness of a vast legacy

Continents filled with melanin skin
