I live in a city of bayous
They snake through our neighborhoods
Silent until the clouds rip the heavens
And unzip themselves and spill selfishly on the Earth
A rumbling from a trickle
Making us uneasy
We tell ourselves it’s normal for water to rise 15 feet
Nothing about that is normal
And within a flash
The bayou’s lash out
Gurgling and seeking every dry spot they can find
We tell ourselves it’s normal for water to overtake homes
Leaving us with an unnatural city river
We wade in our sorrows because we told ourselves
We could beat mother nature
And nothing about that is normal
