The Rise of Al'daer

Of Blades and Magick is a handbook, written by an unknown author from an unknown time, that describes Master Blacksmith Néron's  forging of items with incredible power.

During bladesmithing a form of alchemy occurs which imbues the blade with special properties. Just as night and day, winter and summer affect all the creatures of Sháelarn so it affects the metals and rocks of the land.

Careful timing and skilled hands can combine the materials and alchemy of the land to craft potent weapons. Weapons not just with martial potency, but also magical potency.

A set of blades was designed by the Master Bladesmith, Néron S’Gráoeyn of Bal’Loa, for use by the Magus Prime, Master M’Lanren of Cer’Synden. The walled citadel of Cer’Synden sitting on the largest foot hill of Tor’Ferendàl, the mightiest peak in all Sháelarn, has long been known for its magic and learning.

The set Néron crafted were three blades and they were known as the Mesa Blades of Sháelarn. Individually they were the Mesa Blade of Night, the Mesa Blade of Day and the Mesa Balance Blade of Sháelarn. Each taking three lunar cycles to create. It was never clear within blacksmithing circles quite how Néron learned the art of creating such blades. Even the metal he used was unknown back in the time he created them. Except for one, no other blacksmith has ever made any similar weapons.

Even the creation of these items did not satisfy Master Bladesmith Néron. He desired to use his new found skills to craft ever more powerful weapons and some attest, other items. Stronger magics than had been imbued into the Mesa Blades would give rise to objects of immense magical power. Néron realised that the same could be applied to trinkets such as rings, charms and bracelets. Forged in the same manner as the Mesa Blades, these too would imbue the bearer with magical and martial potency.

One night Néron dreamt of three mighty warriors, one dark and sinister, one shining and bright, the other balanced and centred. This time Néron’s thoughts fell upon the idea of a complete sets of weapons, trinkets and armour. So this too came to pass and on the ninth year, the task was completed.

So it was that a further set of the blades were created. This time they were known as the Annum Blade of Night, the Annum Blade of Day and the Annum Balance Blade of Sháelarn. Each of these taking one lunar year to craft.

The Blade of Night has never had daylight cast on it. Bathed only in starlight and moonlight since its birth the blade radiates with the power of the night, darkness and shadow. The Blade of day has never had starlight or moonlight cast on it. Bathed only in daylight and sunshine since its birth the blade radiates with the power of the day, warmth and light. The Balance Blade of Sháelarn was created with a balanced nature to mirror the other two blades. It knows both shadow and light, both the cold of darkness and the warmth of the sun. It is said by some to be the most powerful of all the blades.

In between crafting the Annum blades Neròn turned his skills to trinkets. The first to be crafted was the Annum Charm of Sháelarn. Neròn worked on this as he did for the balance blades, three hours each day and three hours each night.

It was at this point that a strange twist in the tale of what’s known about these items takes place. When the Annum Balance Blade of Sháelarn, the set of armour and trinkets were completed, Néron sent word to the court of King Endra’tól of Sháelarn that he had a powerful gift to present. And so all the Balance items passed into the hands of Kings once more. However, the Annum blades of Night and Day, along with the armour and trinkets - simply disappeared.

We can be assured Néron did not destroy them and almost as certain he gifted them to some persons, as yet unknown. Should they ever appear on the battlefield, their existence will be clear by the indomitable power of they who possess them.
