The pine trees overhead made a jagged web and Kate felt she was covered with their sharp needles.  She watched Lucas hobble after her sister, trying to figure out what had just happened.  Was there still something between Sybille and Lucas?  Kate clawed the ground for her glasses, but all she felt were more pine needles, moss and dirt.  Where had she put them?  She patted the pockets in her sweatshirt and felt a small sense of comfort in finding them.  She remembered when she had taken them off.
