Disappointment filled Sybille when she realized Lucas had not followed her out of the ice cream shop. She walked home alone through streets that were littered with after-parade detritus which only seemed to emphasize how alone she was. Mallory, Theresa or both were usually at her side and she felt insubstantial without her friends to support her. She did most of her thinking aloud and usually had at least one of her friends to respond to her ideas. Why did Theresa have to go off to camp without her? She should have found a job in town and kept her company for the summer. Mallory was no use on her own.
Sybille wondered where Mallory would have gone without her. She considered phoning Mallory at home, but remembered her bad attitude at the parade....
