Upon leaving Sybille, Kate vowed to do her sister’s wishes.  It would be her penance for sleeping with Lucas.  Her father was home for once and she would speak to both of her parents after supper.

“Mom and Dad, I need to talk to you.  In the den,” Kate said when her Mom began to clear dishes from the table. 

Sybille glared across the table and Kate lowered her head, but her feelings were racing inside.  She couldn’t sit still and so she stood up to help her mother.  Anything to speed up the truth she must tell . . .  and the truth she must hide.

To Kate’s dismay, her mother had taken extra time to create a fancy meal.  There were more dishes than usual.  Their father had returned after ten days away.&...
