When the doorbell rang, Kate was still lying in bed. She had heard Sybille leave and wondered if her sister had locked herself out. She considered staying in bed, but she was powerless to ignore the second ring of the bell, considering it could be her mother or father, having forgotten their keys.
Kate was more than surprised to see Mallory on her front step, clutching an apple and a mangled sandwich.
“Mallory? Are you looking for Sybille?”
“No, no. I just saw her heading to the lake. I’m looking for you. Is it a good time?”
