The doorbell rang and Cara knew she needed to put the book away. She had hoped to know who her mother and father were by now, but she couldn’t read fast enough. She always looked forward to her birthday dinner, but tonight she wished she could put it off, just for another hour or two.
Instead, Cara sloughed off her jeans and t-shirt for a blouse and skirt. She combed her hair, put on a hint of makeup and went to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
“Jack and Erin are here,” her mother called a moment later.
“I’ll be out in a minute,” said Cara.
