After dinner, Mallory offered to do the dishes. 

“Are you kidding?” Jeffrey said, but took her up on the offer.  Kate helped to dry.

“Thanks for coming over tonight,” Mallory grinned.  “It’s good to get that over with.”

“Will your mother really let you go out with him?” Kate said as she carefully wiped a plate.

“My parents aren’t quite like yours, Kate.  They don’t really get all that involved.  They might say stuff and try to talk me out of things, but they’re pretty wrapped up in their own problems.  Especially right now.”  Mallory scrubbed a pot vigorously.

“I guess Sybille tells you about our parents,” Kate said.
