Mallory

Grant had taken Mallory home as promised but she wasn’t ready to talk to her mother yet.  She walked to the river to think about the day and was, at first, slightly annoyed to find Kate sitting on the bench she’d been looking forward to.  But talking to her was a relief.  Mallory hadn’t realized how cloistered her feelings were.  She was overjoyed to find someone who shared her annoyance over Sybille.  Maybe she could trust her with more?

Mallory stole quick glances of Kate as they walked.  She had bags under her eyes and her hair looked unwashed.  So different from her eternally put-together sister. 

“I have a new boyfriend,” Mallory said after a few minutes of consideration.

“Oh?” Kate sounded surprised. ...
