After what seemed like hours, Grant pulled into the trailhead to Dolomite Pass. Although Mallory was still ticked off at him, the scenery distracted her.
“Finally!” she said when he stopped the car. “I really need a smoke.” Her backpack containing her cigarettes was locked in Grant’s trunk and she had been too irritated with him to ask him to stop the car so she could get them out.
“You smoke?” He looked slightly repelled.
“Well, yeah. Don’t you?” She was surprised that she felt chastened by his disgust.
“No. I’ve never even tried. Do you know how bad cigarettes are for you?” He sounded like an annoying teacher.
