Kate

Kate was devastated that Sybille wouldn’t go to the lake with her today.  She had thought they could talk about things and make everything right again.  Or at least start to.  Was she so naïve?  Why did Sybille get to decide what would happen with their relationship?

“Because you slept with her ex-boyfriend, idiot,” Kate said to herself, flicking the toast crumbs away one last time.

Kate had no desire to go to the lake alone.  Only new summer workers who didn’t know the rules went alone. 

Overhead, she could hear the sound of Sybille getting ready for work.  Kate wondered what she’d been doing with her morning.  Kate was amazed to see it was already 10:30.  She watched an ambitious squirrel scurrying alo...
