The efficient hum of lawnmowers droned through the open window. A sprinkler clicked its measured rhythm next door. Sybille managed to avoid her sister at breakfast and then had the morning to herself before she worked the lunch shift at Betty Boop’s. Her mom was taking her brother to the city to buy soccer cleats and her father was golfing. She didn’t know where Kate was and figured she could get away with locking herself in her room for a solitary morning. She already had an empty journal from her sixteenth birthday. Unlike her previous diary filled with hearts and flowers, this one was simply red with a black spine. It wouldn’t be too girly to show Lucas. She opened the book and smoothed out the first page.
