Kate

Hope did not return with the sun.  Kate had dreamt of the lake and thought it was a sign that she and Sybille could regain their friendship if only they could spend some time together, but Sybille had rejected Kate’s request and ignored her as in the days before.  Was there no way to go back? 

After breakfast, Kate remained at the table, thinking.  She knew she was alone in the house with Sybille, but could think of nothing to say to her that would make any difference.
