Mallory

Grant had inspired Mallory to take better care her family.  She would start by making supper.  She imagined losing her mother and shuddered to think what would happen to her and Jeffrey, especially if their father were in jail.  They had an aunt in Manitoba, but she didn’t like children and had only met Mallory and Jeffrey once.  Their grandparents were all dead. 

Mallory made a salad and spaghetti.  It was the only meal she knew how to make, besides opening a can of soup or pouring out a box of cereal.  Spaghetti was her favourite and she always watched her mother carefully to see how everything went together.  She loved adding spices from the well-stocked spice-cabinet.  She decided to try red chili peppers, oregano, basil, cumin and paprika...
