Now I Know

I didn’t know I was a bird.
I didn’t know my wings were clipped.
I didn’t know the little metal band wasn’t always around my foot.
I didn’t know my home was a cage.
Now I know.
My muscles are stiff and sore and the view is unfamiliar.
I am hungry because no one comes to fill the dish, I no longer sit next to.
The rain on my wings is also unfamiliar but I like the way it feels.
Now I know.
I spread my wings, they feel long, full and strong.
I soar and glide on the warm breeze.
When I sing no one is listening but the song is new and beautiful.
Sometimes I feel alone but mostly,
I just feel free.
