I Buried My Father Yesterday
Series Info | Table of Contents

I buried my father yesterday.

I have done it before.

Yet every so often I find him alive in well,

Firmly ensconced in my head.

Singing and dancing, spewing abuse at me, his only child.

I have driven him out many times,

Burned him in effigy,

Attempted exorcisms,

Toxic substances disguised as antidepressants.

When life gets difficult, the guardians of my happiness,

Fall asleep at their posts.

And he is exhumed, full of his usual venom.

I tolerate his presence for a while.

Til I remember that he has been silenced before!

So I begin the process all over again…

I buried my father yesterday.
