I ran. I didn’t know what else to do. The canister I thought was just a flash bang or a smoke bomb turned out to be a cleverly-disguised grenade, one I didn’t recognize. There were at least three bodies, not counting the scumbag I’d been chasing.
My feet pounded pavement and I tried to focus on their rhythm, instead of the horror and carnage behind me. The destruction I’d just caused. I licked my lips and immediately wanted to throw up, the coppery taste of blood – someone else’s – on my tongue, dominating all my senses. I stopped to retch and kept moving.
