I first began to write publicly for the Rankin County News as a football stringer covering Rankin Academy (now defunct) football games as a seventh grader. My seventh grade English teacher had nothing to do with that gig, but Ms. Ann Knight had everything to do with my foundation as a writer. She taught me grammar skills that carried me through even my junior level college grammar class. My 11th grade English teacher, Ms. Leigh Ann Scharr, built on that foundation, noticing that I had a flair for writing and encouraging me to write.
