I had been waiting on a reply from Pastor Denny Burt to an offer I had made several weeks prior to the end of 2005. I had volunteered to help write some curriculum for a church-wide small group study that our church had scheduled for the first of the new year. Denny had worked with small groups at some level for years, but that was just one of several roles for him on the church staff. I knew he could use the help. I love to organize projects—you wouldn’t guess that by a cursory glance at my desk or the inside of my truck—but I wanted to get started in time to do it right…or let go of the idea if he didn’t want the help. I didn’t understand the delay.
