Mr. Ron is my friend and a mentor, of sorts. We have had a number of conversations about the times when we realized our mortality and began to feel a sense of urgency about life. He recalls clearly that his mortality moment came on “the day the music died.” If someone like Buddy Holly—who seemingly had life by the throat—could be taken suddenly in a plane crash, certainly anyone else could face eternity at any moment, too. I have long admired Mr. Ron as someone who faced retirement without the magical million dollars in his retirement fund and allowed God to teach him another way. I think that much of how he and his wife, Mrs. Judy, serve the Lord now in their retirement years emanated from Mr. Ron’s early understanding of man’s mortality.
