Billy and Patrice always walk the block or so to school together, and if they start out not talking to each other, they are always best friends by the time they get there. So, by the time they get to school, Billy is ready to show interest again in Patrice’s birthday present, and she has forgotten to pout. Patrice wanted to bring the coin to school with her and show it to everybody there, but at the last minute, her mother told her not to, that it was too valuable. Patrice promises to show it to Billy as soon as they get home, though, and even says she’ll let him play with it, as long as he’s good. That gets them both through the long, six-hour day, and they practically fly home in the afternoon.
