Three months later

‘Erin, they’ve brought flowers for you,’ Fiona said from the door to the sitting room. Erin looked up from her phone. Her housemate appeared excited. Before she had time to say anything, a wall of red roses nudged Fiona down the hall and made way into the room. Erin gaped.

‘Wait, but… we don’t even have enough vases for this! It’s got to be a mistake. Who’s sending them?’

‘I am,’ the delivery man said, leaving his fragrant load on the coffee table.

‘Adam! You crazy nutcase!’

‘I’m glad to see you too.’ He kissed her cheek. ‘Do you like them? They’re a variety called “Checkmate”. I thought they would be quite apt.’
