Adam and Charlie dropped their load by the cistern. When Charlie fished out a crowbar from behind the thing, Adam cursed himself for not having thought of looking, even though he never had a chance to do so. What could he do now to grab it? He should at least take a dive… and he’d only manage to get his face whacked. He waited, sullen.

‘If you know what’s good for you, don’t move a muscle,’ Charlie said as he used the tool to lever the heavy lid and push it aside. He left the bar far beyond Adam’s reach and, between the two, lifted the lid until they could slid it down the cistern’s side. It would lean there while they dumped Ben inside.
