Adam had run after the car. David helped Reece get up, then they joined the group that had formed in front of the house. Gran was rubbing her ankle while an agent assisted Vilalta, who was sitting on the ground too. Two more mossos in uniform were running towards them. One said something about an ambulance.

‘It’s only a little cut, everything’s going to be all right,’ Gran was saying.

‘No, it isn’t!’ Vilalta replied. ‘This is my shooting arm!’

‘Somebody plugged our exhaust,’ one of the policemen said. ‘We’ve had to come running.’
