As they entered the main road, an unmarked car which had been waiting by the ditch placed itself behind them and kept a discreet distance for the whole journey.

‘She’s fallen asleep again,’ David said. ‘What are you doing to her?’

Adam looked up, resurfacing from his own reverie. ‘What? Nothing!’

David chuckled. ‘It’s nice to catch you by surprise.’

‘Very funny. See, I asked her.’

‘You don’t waste your time, do you?’

‘She said she doesn’t know.’

‘What is it you asked?’

‘About the injunction.’

‘She doesn’t know,’ David muttered. Adam couldn’t be sure whether he was just repeating it to himself or making a statement.
