‘This cannot be a coincidence,’ Kate repeated. She wanted confirmation of her suspicions from the sergeant. ‘In twenty-five years this is the first time we’ve had this sort of thing happen at home, precisely the night these two stayed. It has to be the same people.’

Sergeant Sallent was taking notes on his pad. ‘And nobody heard anything?’

‘We were all tired, my children are deep sleepers, and the bedrooms are all on the other side of the flat.’

Drumming his fingers on the desk, Sallent re-read his notes. ‘Sánchez,’ he asked the officer next to him, ‘are you sure Miss Lowe’s mobile is not being tracked?’
