Erin tried to step over the dog the way Fabi had done, but Fluffy decided to stand up right then. She lost her balance, hit the wall and landed on top of Fluffy, who wiggled his bottom and licked her ear as if he wanted to clean it thoroughly. Three seconds later, Adam and Gerard dashed out of their room, alarmed by the noise. They helped her up while Fabi took Fluffy to his own bed with a reprimand, closing the door of the living room.

‘Did you open the terrace door, Gerard?’ she asked her brother.

‘No, I’ve just got up. Must have been Mama.’

Kate appeared at the end of the corridor, fully dressed.

‘About that,’ she said. ‘I found this outside.’ She showed them a small metallic tool.

‘A screwdriver?’ Gerard said.
