Adam’s friends had found Reece. Some people had seen the van incident and had assisted him, reported to the police, and called an ambulance, and now Reece was resting in a hospital bed with his head decorated with a bandage. He had given a statement (a remarkably short one saying he was standing on the street and suddenly he wasn’t) and he had been told he was all right, but he would be made to stay the night for observation. When the pair arrived to the room they found him having an animated conversation with Gerard’s sister, a small girl of about fifteen all dressed in black except for the brightly coloured bandana tying her hair back.

‘Careful, man,’ Adam said, ‘Fabi looks harmless but she’s a tourist eater.’
