Never was she gladder to be wearing her shades. What should she do now? Why was he taunting her?

‘So?’

‘Well, they told me about this idea they had to leave beforehand, you know, to go with a bang. A dramatic exit so that everybody will remember the event for a long time. Come, let’s discuss it, you can bet it’ll be worth it.’

Here was the lie. What he meant to achieve with it she had no idea, but she was not going to bite.

‘Thank you for the offer,’ she said in a level tone, ‘but at the moment all we can do is wait. Go enjoy the food with the others.’

She skirted him cleanly and went on her way hoping he wouldn’t follow her.
