He made a show of considering the answer. ‘Well, um, er… No. Now do me the favour of removing yourself from my line of sight.’

‘Can’t you think of anything that may help us find them? Didn’t he tell you about his plans?’

Adam loomed over Erin. From a distance, and even at the dinner they’d shared weeks ago, he had looked lanky and shortish; but he was actually inches taller than she was, and a reasonable amount of muscle was half hidden under his roomy shirt. For a moment, she felt threatened. She instinctively drew back, which made her swear inwardly when she realised.

‘Charlie doesn’t give me the time of the day, so no, I can’t help you. Now split. Go play detectives somewhere else.’

Erin faltered.

‘Beat it!...
