While I was usually able to get back to the “gravy” as far as my career was concerned, I seemed unable to get past the bitterness and cynicism caused by my breakup with Rita. I struggled to find an explanation of why it still hurt so much and why it continued to inflict so much emotional damage.

     Admittedly, Rita and I had too many moments together that weren’t very pleasant, perhaps because we shared some of the same character flaws. For most relationships that fail, the culprit is irreconcilable differences. For Rita and me, it may have been irreconcilable similarities.
