Kara Sparx held her breath, her mouth a tight line, as she pulled the trigger on her newest invention. For a moment, there was no outward effect. Then the air about ten feet ahead of her shimmered. The corners of her lips twitched upward as the shimmering spot widened, resolving itself into a wavy-edged portal, rimmed with glowing green light.

Behind her, Snowflake gasped. His words came out in a near blur. "Oh god you made a portal gun that works!" His stubby fingers twitched. "Can I hold it?"

Kara pulled the gun up and close to her body. Snowflake was her friend, but the uplifted panda was known for his inappropriate love of guns. "Better if you don't. It's still in the testing phase."
