“I’m worried you’ve cracked,” said her best friend over the telephone.

“Manic,” was the word her therapist had used.

“I’ll be fine,” she said as she ended the call and silenced the ringer.

She had rented a dumpster. She was being completely rational: Getting rid of the old hurts to make room for new happy memories. Photographs, lamps, chairs- anything that he had touched went into the trash.

At last, the house was totally empty. It felt good.

“Meow,” said the cat.

She looked at him. They’d had him ten years. 

She had always been a dog person.

 “Here, Kitty, kitty-”
