The Sweetest Taste
Series Info | Table of Contents

For all those who do not speak the same language as their parents

Mangos taste like home

Or at least it seems to me

The tart bittersweet promise

Of what just could not be

Of home and love and longing

For a long lost family.

My father’s eyes are shaped like almonds

But I just cannot see

Etched in his face that same longing

For what just could not be

How bittersweet his smile

As he sits and lies to me

And tells me of our family’s

Long lost mango trees.

The taste in my mouth is bitter-

As I sit and bite my tongue-

It tastes like a putrid mango

Left to rotten in the sun.
