CHANNILLO

This One's for You
Series Info | Table of Contents

They will tell you you’re not good enough

They will try to tell you

That you have no right to exist

That your needs are not valid

That you’re an imposition

That you’re a disgrace

They will tell try to break you

So they can make you fit into their mold

Because if you do not look like them

If you do not move like them

If you do not talk like them

If you do not walk like them

You are not worthy

              -But that’s a lie.

They will grind you down with words

And tell you prophecy is only for the powerful

That words are only for the weak

They will tell you tears are signs of weakness

And make you turn the other cheek

              -But that’s a lie

Here’s the truth:

Broken one- you are valid

Hurting one- you are loved

Crying one- someone hears

This is not for a literary magazine

Or for a contest

It’s not for the ones who have crushed your heart

It’s not for the ones who have the power

It’s for you

The broken

The downtrodden

The marginalized

The forgotten

“The least of these”

This one’s for you.

I relate to this poem so much. I suffered the same abuse growing up. That's one reason I feel mental health awareness is so important now, especially for the new generations growing up. Looking forward to reading more of your work.
