of that failure was written all over her face. How could he explain this to her? Explain any of this to her? Just because there was no way she would understand what was happening – hell, HE didn’t understand it – that didn’t mean she deserved to be treated like this. "I'm so, so sorry but I can't stay here."

He almost went back into the room. He almost took Karen in his arms and soothed her, slipping into bed and going back to sleep. But the panic of the dream that he couldn’t quite recall was propelling him into action. He dressed in the kitchen and walked out the door. He couldn't stay there, but he had no idea where he was going.

That was a lie. Breaking into a run, he realized he knew exactly where he was going.
