I sit chain smoking on my

Grandmother’s porch whom

I’ve always referred to as Maggie.

 

I cut my hair today

Got work clothes,

A few pairs of shoes,

And even had a conversation

With a stranger about books.

 

Something I wouldn’t have been able

To do years ago.

 

I see that truck drive past me

And I wonder if the driver

Or passenger has ever

Found themselves barely

Able to breathe.

 

I think about who I’ve recently

Left behind and what they’re thinking about.

 

How the weather is where they are,

Right now my legs are cold from this

Autumn air and I have someone to warm

Me up but for som...
