The program assigned several readings to prepare me for a semester abroad in New Zealand. Readings on what to pack, what the culture is like, and what I would be learning my semester abroad. One such document was titled “Homelessness or Homemaking? The Christian College in a Postmodern Culture.” “Hmm,” I wondered. “What does the concept of ‘home’ have to do with a sustainable development program?” Turns out, everything.

The paper – written by professors Steven Bouma-Prediger and Brian Walsh, who sometimes taught courses for the program – argued that college education had turned into little more than education “for upward mobility, to alienate people from their habitation, and pillage the earth.” He called this global homelessness.
