Written by Michael Sloan and directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman, The Caller (1987) is a brilliant and highly engaging mystery movie that employs only two characters to execute the plot – the caller (Malcolm McDowell) and the girl (Madolyn Smith Osborne). The movie is also a great combo of a sci-fi thriller and mystery drama.

The story starts on the screen with an axe coming down onto the picture of the girl – henceforth the woman – followed by the woman exiting a shop and driving her car away from the parking lot while a man holding a payphone at a phone booth watches her. That evening, when the woman is at her cabin house in the woods, the same man arrives and asks if he can use her phone to call for assistance with his car that broke down a few miles away.
